Back to School Night for Parents

Waldorf Education What to Expect

Join us for Back to School Night at City of Lakes Waldorf School on Wednesday, November 2, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm and become a Waldorf student for an evening! Have the opportunity to step inside a Waldorf middle school classroom and experience lessons in history, perspective drawing, and science. See first-hand how our curriculum cultivates both critical and creative thinking skills – uniquely preparing students for high school, college, and beyond.

This event is not-to-be-missed, especially for families making decisions about elementary and middle school. Come and see for yourself why area high schools rave about our alumni and their noteworthy enthusiasm for learning. All are welcome!

What to Expect

The evening will begin promptly at 6:30 pm with an engaging presentation by Peter Lawton, 6th Grade Teacher, on the Seven Core Principles of Waldorf Education. You will then have the opportunity to step into the classroom and explore two of the following three subjects:

  • History | Darcie Steeves, 8th grade teacher
The Waldorf middle schooler travels through time from Ancient Rome to the modern revolutions. Each pause in this trip allows students to increasingly understand the human condition, build empathy, and become better acquainted with each other and themselves. We will look at the significance of teaching history through biography, and explore the powerful way this method creates context for the middle school language arts curriculum.
  • Perspective Drawing | Lauri Pierce, 7th grade teacher
“It’s all about perspective” may be an over-used aphorism, yet it nonetheless succinctly expresses the pre-adolescent’s awakening to the importance of view point in art, literature, history–indeed in most aspects of human existence. We will begin with a bit of geometry and math, followed by some perspective drawing, accompanied throughout by discussion of how these activities serve as metaphors for the human social experience.
  • Phenomenological Science | Jessica Crawford, 4th grade teacher and former middle school teacher and Sarina Partridge, 1st grade teacher and former middle school teacher
Experience a 7th grade chemistry lesson: a study of the candle flame. This taste of a middle grades science lesson includes an observation using the senses, chalk pastel drawing, and a discussion using precise language to describe and reflect on the experience.
